The clock hands have whizzed round and round, and now it’s nearly one.

‘Okay,’ Alice says. ‘Perhaps we should leave in a bit, as you probably need to get some rest?’ She waggles her eyebrows saucily at me. Her make-up is tear-stained, but I’m glad to see she’s perked up, although that might be due to the second gin. ‘Somebody needs to be getting some action.’ She sniffs noisily.

I grin. ‘Here’s hoping.’ From the corner of my eye, I can swear I see Rose twitch and her face changes. Oh, shite! Am I rubbing her face in it? It’s not my fault I’m happy. And getting some!

Suddenly, I have a flashback. Two years ago. Matt was visiting his parents in France for a week. They had a French provincial house with a pool. And a tennis court. For whatever reason, he didn’t invite Alice. I gathered he had issues to sort with his parents and needed privacy, but she was still miffed. In fact, she was so angry about it, she brought a strange man home from a nightclub while he was away. I’d stumbled out of my room early in the morning and bumped into a man wearing only his boxer shorts exiting the bathroom. As it was only Alice and me living there, and I had never clapped eyes on this bloke in my life, I assumed he was with Alice. He nodded a greeting and bounced into Alice’s bedroom. Judging by the giggling and crashing coming from there, I guessed he wasn’t there to read the electricity meter. The matter was never mentioned and maybe she didn’t realise that I knew about it. So, even though I have sympathy, it’s a bit tricky when the pot is calling the kettle black… or whatever that stupid saying is.

Outside it is icy, and I watch them hug each other as they go their separate ways. Some part of me fears Alice will start to like Rose more than me. That I will lose my ‘bestie’ to another woman. Jealous claws rake at me. Could that ever happen? Would Alice forsake me? Am I now boring? What is the matter with me? Alice has stood by me through every experience of my life so far, and I have stood by her. What is it about Rose that makes me feel so insecure?
